Harley-Davidson’s UL Flathead motorcycle was a very popular choice for customizing in the late 1950’s early 1960’s. The motor was easy to maintain and very reliable with proper maintenance. The Flathead motor had enough of torque and horsepower to push a lightweight rigid frame machine along at freeway speed of 65 MPH but suffered from a breathing problem. Modern overhead valve motors of the era were cranking out far more torque and horsepower, using higher compression and better breathing intake tracts. Nonetheless, the Flathead motor is still a viable candidate for Chopper power as seen by this Metalflake UL built by Terry of the Peckerheads Car Club. S&S Cycle of Viola, Wisconsin is the best source for Flathead replacement parts I can think of. Enjoy the view………..
