BUFFALO CHIP CHALLENGE BIKE NEARS COMPLETION

The Buffalo Chip Challenge bike build, under construction by students at Brown High School in Sturgis, South Dakota is nearly complete. I was allowed to photo-document this year’s custom build, and had a whole bunch of fun doing it! I can honestly say that this year’s BUFFALO CHIP CHALLENGE bike will not only be to be a head-turning, show stopping custom motorcycle, but has also contributed greatly to the two wheeled educational quotient in the hearts and minds of the high school student participants. The Buffalo Chip Challenge motorcycle will be unveiled at the Chip during the annual 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Sturgis High students with lead instructor and motorcycle industry veteran Keith Terry are finalizing the customization of a stone stock Harley-Davidson® Road King donated by Black Hills-Harley Davidson into a one of a kind custom touring classic. Photos of the Buffalo Chip Challenge bike will be featured in the August 2012 issue of American Iron Magazine. The Challenge Bike will then be auctioned off at the 2012 Sturgis Rally to raise money in support of the 5th Annual Legends Ride. The Legends Ride has contributed more than $200,000 to Black Hills charities over the preceding 5 years. One of the most significant modifications in the initial phase of the build was the installation of a weld-on Hawg Halters neck rake kit, altering the front fork rake & trail to accommodate a 23″ custom wheel. Nick Cramer, from Dakota V-Twin, a custom motorcycle shop in Spearfish, SD has been providing assistance to Keith Terry and the students while they modify the bike. A wide variety of custom components have been donated from industry notable brand names including Avon Tyres, RC Components, Black Widow Cams, Corbin Seats, Dakota Digital, Dimension Custom Paint & Body, Hawg Halters Inc., Hawg Wired Inc., K & G Cycle LLC, Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, Legend Air Suspensions, RC Components, Sinister Industries, Thunder Cycle Design. and Jacob Van Kampen. “We not only want to give the students of Brown High School in Sturgis real world experience, we want to make sure they are working with the top custom parts and accessories the motorcycle industry has to offer” said Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “The response we have received from aftermarket companies as been overwhelming and many of the parts that will be used for the build are so innovative and new, most have not yet been offered to the general public.” Everyone is invited to follow the Buffalo Chip Challenge build at http://www.facebook.com/SturgisLegendsRide (Edit 4/22/2019: This url no longer active), where pictures and video of the Buffalo Chip Challenge on view. STUDENT: Bailey Long parents Glen and Janet Long live in rural Meade County 50 plus miles from school. “This is a great program. Bailey has enjoyed the class so much. He has increased his welding skills and prepared him for several welding competitions he is participating and winning in. He has included the fact that this is for a local charity on his college applications. He drives to school on Saturdays to take part.” It was exciting as parents to see how the teacher was promoting and bragging on this program at the parent teacher conferences.”
