CLASSIC GLENCOE CHOPPER

GOLD IS WHERE YOU FIND IT!

As the old saying goes….gold is where you find it! Jason Simms media man at Glencoe Campground Dakota discovered this Classic Chopper at an undisclosed location in Rapid City South Dakota. He purchased it for a song, and he can’t even sing, I’ll vouch for that! These photos were taken at the Glencoe Camp Ground right afetr a little rain. For all you Johnny come lately chopper riders, I describe the motorcycle. It’s a 1966 Harley-Davidson Sportster, an XLCH if you will. It was prime chopping block material back in the year 1969 and later. The front fork is what I am guessing to be a Denver Choppers Springer, with a Honda drum brake of unknown origin mounted. The seat is almost a King and Queen item, but not quite. Of course the sissy bar is self explanatory. Some Harley-Davidson Big-Twin riders have only disdain for the little twin, and they refer to it as a boat anchor, even at this late date. I have no love for Iron Head Sportsters, being the previous owner of one such recalcitrant motorcycle. It was very much a pain to keep running, keep tuned, and keep shit from vibrating loose. But when it ran, it ran like a bat of hell. I’ve always wanted to use that expression in a sentence. The scariest part of this motorcycle is the fact that the rear brake pedal is on the left. One beer and you’ll forget that fact…..then you’re in deep doodoo. The moral of the story if there is one, is to keep your eyes and ears open and if you’re luckier than a lottery winner you may find a Classic Chopper treasure like this. Jason plans on restoring this jewel to it’s original “Chopper” condition. I have recommended to him to swap the brake and shifter side-to-side to get something conventional for his feet when riding. May prevent some unwanted strawberries. When he’s finished, you’ll see the end product here. Oh yeah…..where can new magnets for the Joe Hunt magneto be purchased? If you’ll be attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2012, you can see this motorcycle and many others on display at the Glencoe Campground pavilion.
