BUFFALO CHIP CHALLENGE™ BIKE BUILD

GIVES STURGIS SD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

REAL WORLD EDUCATION

STURGIS (February 24, 2012) The Buffalo Chip Challenge student bike build is taking Bagger motorcycle bravado to a whole new level for the 2012 Sturgis Rally. At Sturgis Brown High School in Sturgis, South Dakota students are beginning the initial stages of the customization with Keith Terry of Terry Components advising both the instructor Bill Johnson and students while they convert a totally stock Harley-Davison® Road King donated by Black Hills-Harley Davidson into a one of a kind custom touring classic. The initial phase of the bike build will give students insights on how concept design, parts layout and planning play into building one of the top custom bikes in the nation. Also on the advisor staff are Randy Cramer, and Nick Cramer of Dakota V-Twin located in Spearfish South Dakota. The three advisors offer a combination of bike building experience that will contribute greatly to the Legends project.

With Keith Terry of Terry Components serving as the lead instructor for this build will give the students a “real world” edge while they learn how to customize a stock motorcycle in line with current industry trends as well as the tastes and preferences of the buying public. Terry conceptualized a design for the students that looked and rode great, complete with frame-mounted fairing, 23 inch front wheel, high-output sound system and a host of quality components and desirable Bagger accessories.

“We not only want to give the students of Brown High School in Sturgis real world experience, we want to make sure they are working with the top custom parts and accessories the motorcycle industry has to offer” commented Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “The response we have received from aftermarket companies as been overwhelming and many of the parts that will be used for the build are so innovative and new, most have not yet been offered to the general public.”

A significant effort in the initial phase of the build will be to provide new geometry to the front end of the motorcycle in order to accommodate the new 23″ custom wheel-tire assembly contributed RC Components. Randy and Nick Cramer from Dakota V-Twin will be assisting Keith Terry and the students by removing the neck of the stock frame in order to modify the rake and trail of the front end as a new “weld-on” neck and triple trees from Hawg Halters, Inc. will then be installed by the students. Klock Werks Kustom Cycles contributed a custom rear fender and Sinister Industries contributed a custom extended saddle bag set which when installed and painted will provide the Legends Bagger with a lean, low profile accentuating the motorcycle’s custom profile from front wheel to rear wheel.

“This program does so much to enhance student’s skill sets, confidence and abilities,” says Keith Terry of Terry Components. “Probably the greatest insight students are gaining with the program is how to relate things they are learning in other classes to this real world application. Removing the front end of the bike and modifying its rake and trail, has as much to do with students geometry class as it has to do with building a bike.”

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® is proud to champion the Buffalo Chip Challenge™ and provide local students in Sturgis with the skills they need to become great technicians in the South Dakota workforce. The finished Buffalo Chip Challenge motorcycle will be featured in the August 2012 issue of American Iron Magazine and will be auctioned off during the 2012 Sturgis Rally in support of the 5th annual Legends Ride, which has given more than $200,000 to local Black Hills charities thus far.

The public is invited to follow the Buffalo Chip Challenge build at http://www.facebook.com/SturgisLegendsRide, where pictures and video of the Buffalo Chip Challenge will be published, or to get more information and make reservations for the Legends Ride by visiting www.buffalochip.com or calling (605) 347 9000.
